That’s right, I voted for what I believed in. I gave my buck-seventy-five without hesitation. They only got 5% in my riding, but that’s a start. I voted Green last election, and I’ll vote Green next election.
As it turns out, Conservative candidate John Baird won the Ottawa-Nepean West riding with 40%, followed fairly closely at 35% by Liberal candidate Lee Farnworth.
Oh, and feel free to borrow the image above… Just give me a link back for credit if you do. I think I’ll come up with some other nice badges of similar ilk.

As a final note – it seems I was pretty much right with my predictions, with the exception of the Green Party getting a seat. I must admit I added that as optimism and did not want to jinx things out of paranoia.
I was perusing some historical data on Canadian elections, trying to determine when the New Democratic Party held the most power in our government. It seems that in the 1988 election they managed to obtain 14.6% of the total seats – 43 specifically. That year they also ran their most candidates: 295.
For a party that gave us medicare it seems kind of strange. That’s the most they’ve ever held. In 1993 the Reform Party by contrast managed to gain 17.6% of the seats for a total of 52 while running in only 207 ridings. (The NDP dropped drastically in support this year as well, dropping from 43 seats to a miniscule 9.)
It seems the NDP are content to hold the swing vote. It’s too bad, since it’s a party that has actually done some historical good in this country. I think Canada could have embraced their policies this time around, if only they’d ran a better campaign.
Sadly, the power this election like all others since confederation will go to either the tories or the grits. I supported Reform back in the day and they got swallowed by the tories. I’ll support the Greens this election in hopes of getting their voice in parliament. Too bad the only thing about this election for the history books will be it’s season.
U.S. President George W. Bush has always scared me. His administration has invaded other countries, run itself virtually bankrupt and generally pissed off most of the world. Now, he sets his sights on his own people.
The Truth Project is a group of Quakers in Florida. They where targeted because they promote peace and organize anti-war protests. The military intelligence gathered on these people (all of them white, church-going senior citizens) is over 400 pages long. So, war-protesting peace-promoting Quakers are a national threat? What are they going to do? Shout and stamp until something explodes? Jeeze.
It reminds me of the fellow who was arrested a few years ago in a New York mall for wearing an anti-war T-Shirt he bought. In that very same mall. His crime? Wearing an anti-war t-shirt. I do believe they got away with arresting and charging this poor fellow if my memory serves me correctly.
Yes, it’s fear mongering in a sense, but I do think it’s good to be aware of what’s going on with our southern neighbors. The president wields too much power, and his policies both at home and abroad reek of something else we’ve seen in the past… Say about 60 to 70 years ago?
