Buzz Bombs

Unless you avoid the news (not a bad hobby, really) you’ve likely heard about the RCMP/CSIS arrests of 17 terror suspects in Southern Ontario. I’m sure these aren’t the first, but they are definitely the most widely publicized. It makes sense, because one of their alleged targets was the CBC. If you target the media, of course the media will vilify you.

And, oh the arguments are just getting started on this one. I try my best to keep an open mind, and embrace Canada’s multiculturalism as much as I can, and I must say that I agree with some of the comments on CBC’s web-forum asking the Muslim religious leaders here to be more forthcoming in terms of publicly denouncing the extremist sects within their communities. If these terrorist suspects had been another religion I’m relatively certain we’d be hearing some priest on the news assuring people that it’s not their religion at fault.

The world is on edge right now because it’s changing. Perhaps it’s been going on for a long time, but with the rise of the Information Age, there’s a global consciousness that did not exist before – and now we’re aware of the changes. To quote Tommy Lee Jones’ character (agent ‘K’) in the movie Men In Black

“A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it.”

Silence from the community that these extremists are an offshoot from is bound to be perceived as acceptance of their beliefs, at least to the public at large. Right or wrong, it’s a part of Western fabric to be suspicious of middle-eastern descendants. It’s about time we started to address that and educated people of the difference between Muslim and terrorist. Unfortunately for those of the Muslim faith, Western society is not going to do this on it’s own – they’re going to have to step up to the plate and help a little, or they will continue to be painted with the same brush because Western eyes (in general) cannot tell the difference.

Ontario Attempts to Relieve Debt Stress

By putting restrictions on what collections agents are allowed to do, and setting the bar for what is considered harrasment. It’s a step in the right direction, but I wonder what exactly they will do to collection groups that misbehave?

So Much for Sleep

After spending most of the warm night waking up to coughing fits due to bronchitis, I was looking forward to sleeping in this morning since I will be working the evening shift for a while longer. However, I got a message from my roommate telling me that someone from the Health Department is stopping by soon to check out our bathroom.

See, we’ve got this problem with black mold growing in there and we can’t seem to kill it. Back in November we tried to get the building to address this issue, but their solution was to paint over it on the ceiling and do nothing about the mold in the grouting – which we can’t seem to get rid of.

It was a theory that we where considering that it may have something to do with why I’ve been sick for the past three weeks with respiratory problems. It may not, but I guess this visit will help to determine that. However, it means I have to be awake now. C’est la vie, I guess. It’d be nice to get some sleep sometime, though.
