Purging

A little at a time, I slowly accumulate… Stuff. I think we all do, however I live in a relatively small space and all of this stuff is threatening to take over! There was really, in my mind, only one thing for it: A bottle of wine, and locking myself in my room with the intent of decrapification.

Sans-wine, I started this process over the weekend – including today I’m up to three full green-garbage bags and a stack of rubbish that have gone out to the dumpster. I did find that sipping an adequate bottle of red wine this evening certainly helped with the dispassionate aspect required of getting rid of broken items that have waited for repair and/or use for years.

Some of this stuff I’ve packed, moved, unpacked, packed, moved (rinse, repeat, etc.) and never actually used. Why do I have it? Because I thought I might use it some day. Realistically, I haven’t used a large amount of it – so, if it’s worth saving it’s going to charity. However, most of this stuff has been rough treated and useless to anyone. That stuff is going in the green-bags.

Musical Baggage?

I can’t quite place my finger on it – but I’ve been experiencing a rather long period of writers block. I’ve had no shortage of musical ideas but the lyrics just haven’t been there.
I dug up a collection of concept ideas I recorded in 2004 and the nagging feeling I’ve had about a few of the unfinished and neglected songs on that demo resurfaced.

It occurred to me that many times I have picked up my guitar, several things might be contributing to the block. I have a thought in the back of my head – I loved the chord progressions and vocal melodies on one particular track – but I never finished the lyrics and I’ve forgotten the guitar line. But I’ve procrastinated and time has past. I guess it just nags at me. After listening to the demo again two years later – I start to wonder if there is some baggage and guilt from leaving things untouched during a very busy writing period.

I relearned my own guitar work from one of the songs and will see if I can polish the lyrics some more. My site on My Space has the recording from the demo – It’s listed as “Tight (Salvation)” which is more of a working title than anything.

Geek Toy – Roomba

I’m not much for toys – but sometimes something catches my eye as being a handy thing to have. The Roomba robot, created by iRobot is one such device. Put it down, press a button and this little robot traverses your home vacuming on it’s own. It can go under furniture and has automatic room discovery software that allows it to get a picture of the area to be cleaned and figure out the most efficient way to do so.

It even has the ability to detect areas that are extra dirty and gives them a little extra attention. This is great, for someone like myself – I have a tendency to operate in my own little world and that sometimes leads to unintentional neglect of such tasks such as floor cleaning. Advanced models allow for scheduling of the little cleaning beasty and the Roomba can even park itself in it’s charger by itself.

Imagine you can go about your daily life and this small droid takes care of your floors for you. Replace frequent cleaning tasks such as vacuming and sweeping with merely picking up the Roomba and emptying it’s dirt chamber occasionally.

Of course, at $300 and up (although a refurbished model goes for $200) such convenience is not cheap.
